What is TennDent?

TennDent is the dental part of TENNderCARE. It is only for children under age 21. TennDent covers EPSDT services for the mouth and teeth that are preventive. TennDent also covers dental treatments that are medically necessary. Medically necessary means that you would be harmed if you did not get treatment.

Every child and teen needs regular check-ups, even if they are healthy. These check-ups help your dentist find and treat problems early. This is called preventive care. Children under age 21 get a check-up and cleaning every six months.

Visits to a dentist can include having your teeth looked at and cleaned, fluoride treatments, sealants, and care that is medically necessary.

TennDent covers these services when they are medically necessary:

For services that say “with prior approval,” your dentist, TennDent, and TennCare all have to agree you need them. If you have questions about what dental services you can have, call TennDent at (877) 418-6886.

Braces are covered only when they are medically necessary. The TennDent dentist can tell you if you meet the rules to have braces. You must get approval from TennDent before getting braces.

You should always try to go to a TennDent dentist. TennCare will pay for care from any dentist if it is an emergency or, in some cases, when dental treatment is continued by a non-TennDent dentist. Click here to find a TennDent dentist.

If you need dental care that is not available from a TennDent dentist, you should call TennDent at (877) 418-6886. TennDent will give you a referral for a dentist who can provide that service. You will only be responsible for your copay amount, if you have a copay.

It is very important that you call TennDent for a referral. TennDent and TennCare will only pay for these services if you have a referral.
